YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Knights of Columbus Immaculata Youngstown Council No. 274 established a $100,000 scholarship at Youngstown State University.

To be awarded the scholarship, a student must be from a Catholic parish in Mahoning County, with preference given to a student of a current or deceased family member of the Knights of Columbus. Any member of a religious order is eligible.

One student from each class rank – freshman, sophomore, junior and senior – will be awarded the scholarship each academic year. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.

“Our Knights of Columbus council is very much about our community, especially our younger people and their future,” said Dustin Tolson, grand knight of Youngstown Council No. 274. “Just being able to give back to community members by helping them grow and move forward in their lives is very important to us.”

The Knights of Columbus Youngstown Council No. 274 was founded in 1897 and was the first Knights of Columbus council established in Ohio. Council No. 274 serves the city of Youngstown and is based at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica.

The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic men’s fraternal organization in the world, founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity to bring financial aid and assistance to the sick, disabled and needy members and their families.

The scholarship funds will be housed at the YSU Foundation. Selections will be made by the scholarship committee of the Knights of Columbus in conjunction with the YSU Foundation.
