BOARDMAN, Ohio – Leadership Mahoning Valley will present its On Board! Board Training Program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Way Volunteer Resource Center, 8133 Market St.

Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors and what it takes to be an effective nonprofit board member. Topics include foundational best practices in nonprofit governance.

The training will provide participants with an understanding of the sector, the basic tenets of governance and individual roles and responsibilities as nonprofit leaders. The training program is a resource for those wishing to enhance their understanding of their duty to their organization, the nonprofit sector and the community.

Nonprofit leaders, individuals who currently serve as board members and those interested in serving on nonprofit boards are encouraged to attend.

Beth Short, director of charitable outreach and education at the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section, will be the guest presenter. Short has spent her career working for and with nonprofit organizations. She has a background in working with charities as a staff member, board member, consultant and volunteer for large and small organizations. She has experience in journalism, legislative and public affairs and training, complemented by a master’s degree in business that focused on nonprofit management issues.

Her work in the Charitable Law Section focuses on the development of strategies aimed at strengthening the nonprofit sector. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University and Ohio University and serves as president-elect of the National Association of State Charity Officials.

The Leadership Mahoning Valley training is designed for new and established board members and/or nonprofit leadership and will include content from Charitable University, a new learning platform developed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, which provides tools for leading a charitable organization: board governance, governmental filings, financial operations and internal controls, filings and recordkeeping and fundraising.

Participants who complete the training will be included in the new Leadership Mahoning Valley BoardMatch program, which will connect individuals interested in serving on boards with nonprofit organizations in need of board members.

Charitable leaders who complete the training will also receive completion credit for the program and their names listed on the Ohio attorney general’s web page as acknowledgement of their commitment to learning about their important roles as sector leaders. They will also receive a completion certificate that can be shared with funders to illustrate their organization’s commitment to sound board governance practices.

The day will begin with registration, a continental breakfast and networking at 8 a.m., followed by the program and a panel discussion with local nonprofit leaders, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch is included. The cost to attend is $60 per person, and reservations are required. Groups of six can register at a reduced rate of $300 for a group of six.
