SHARON, Pa. – Several communities in Mercer and Lawrence counties will receive funds through the Commonwealth Financing Authority Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program for various projects.

The city of Sharon was awarded $166,970 to transform the former Huntington Bank building site into an open park space. The project will feature pedestrian-friendly trails, walkways and bench seating along the Shenango River, with new energy-efficient lighting to improve safety and accessibility.

“I always appreciate working with local municipalities to access funding that provides the ability to expand recreational opportunities for local families and visitors alike,” said Sen. Michele Brooks, R-50th. “This project continues to build on the growth of downtown Sharon and capitalizes on its waterfront appeal.”

The city of Hermitage will receive $95,000 for the Hermitage Athletic Complex field lighting project. The city will purchase and install a factory-built, wired, aimed and tested lighting system that includes pre-cast concrete bases, galvanized steel poles, factory-wired and tested remote electrical component enclosures, pole-length factory-assembled wire harnesses and factory-aimed and assembled luminaires with technology to track a ball in play.

“This is fantastic news for the Shenango Valley,” said Rep. Parke Wentling, R-7th. “Both projects will be beneficial for everyone and help continue to make the 7th Legislative District one of the best places to live, work and raise a family.”

The city of New Castle will receive a $200,000 grant to support the creation of a community park designed to improve physical and mental health. Hope Park will be located on vacant property near the Human Services Center’s Fairweather Lodges. It will feature a small amphitheater, a community garden, a walking trail with fitness equipment and a therapeutic garden.

Neshannock Township was awarded $100,000 to support Phase II of the Hutchison Community Center Improvements Project. The funds will support the center’s full renovation, including the addition of approximately 3,330 square feet of covered outdoor space, seating for 180 people and a masonry wood-burning fireplace.

“These two projects represent significant investments in the well-being of our community,” said Rep. Marla Brown, R-9th. “From a new park in New Castle to expanded recreational space in Neshannock, these upgrades will provide much-needed places for residents to connect, relax and enjoy the outdoors, while also supporting local economic growth.”

The Commonwealth Financing Authority was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to administer the commonwealth’s economic stimulus packages.
