YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning County commissioners have introduced updated mission and vision statements, along with a set of core values that will guide the county’s operations, policymaking and community engagement efforts.

The new guiding principles are designed to reflect the county’s dedication to creating an inclusive, sustainable and innovative community where residents, workers and visitors can thrive, the commissioners said in a statement released Friday.

“These principles are at the heart of everything we do,” the statement reads. “Our mission, vision, and values not only define who we are but also guide how we engage with and serve the community. By holding ourselves to these high standards, we aim to create a county where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

The newly adopted vision statement reads: “We envision a sustainable and inclusive community where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive and prosper, driven by collaboration and innovation.”

The mission statement affirms that “Mahoning County provides responsive and dynamic services in pursuit of a thriving and equitable community for all who work, live, and visit.”

In addition to the mission and vision, the commissioners also outlined a set of core values aimed at strengthening governance and public service. The values include:

  • Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
  • Accountability: Owning, learning and acting from mistakes while upholding behaviors that reflect the county’s values.
  • Collaboration: Working together to pool resources and ideas in pursuit of innovation and shared goals.
  • Loyalty: Demonstrating unwavering dedication to the best interests of Mahoning County.
  • Respect: Listening, practicing empathy and ensuring fairness in all interactions.
  • Excellence: Continuously improving practices, policies and services to deliver operational excellence.
  • Diversity: Bringing together individuals with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives to foster innovation and improve outcomes across the county.

According to the commissioners, these foundational elements will steer county initiatives in areas such as economic development, infrastructure and public services. They emphasized that the goal is to align government action with the needs and aspirations of the county’s residents.

The commissioners are encouraging residents, stakeholders and community leaders to embrace the mission and values and work together “in building a stronger, more connected future.”
