YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Mahoning County Bar Association Foundation awarded more than $20,000 in law school scholarships to 16 students with ties to the Youngstown area.

The foundation makes annual awards based on academic performance, financial need and requirements tied to specific scholarships. Funding comes from the foundation’s general fund as well as memorial, education and business funds.

Attorney Samuel Amendolora, president of the foundation, said the scholarships assist students with tuition and living expenses.

“The Foundation is proud to contribute to the success of deserving law students who will have an effect on the legal community in Youngstown and other areas,” Amendolora said.

Ten students received scholarships from the general fund:

  • John Beshara, University of Akron School of Law
  • Kevin Durkin, University of Akron School of Law
  • Lilly Essad, Cleveland State School of Law
  • Olivia DiLallo, Case Western Reserve School of Law
  • Joseph Notter, Capital University School of Law
  • Tyler Storey, University of Tennessee College of Law
  • Alyssa Oswald, Duquesne Kline School of Law
  • Haley Beish, University of Akron School of Law
  • Ainsley McCaughtry, University of Akron School of Law
  • Dylan Henning, University of Dayton School of Law

Six students received scholarships from named funds:

  • Serena Sammarone, Kretzer scholarship, Cleveland State College of Law
  • Francisco Rivera-Ocasio, Kretzer scholarship, Cleveland State College of Law
  • Michael Kelly, Rigelhaupt scholarship, University of Akron School of Law
  • William Goodwin, Rigelhaupt scholarship, University of Akron School of Law
  • Caleigh Calvey, Rossi scholarship, Ohio Northern College of Law
  • Alyssa Weyend, Melnick scholarship, Cleveland State College of Law

In addition to scholarships, the foundation provides support for attorneys and families in times of hardship and sponsors a community speaker series on a range of topics. Applications for next year’s scholarships will be available in the spring.
