YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning County Board of Commissioners’ most notable achievement of 2024 is the county’s exceptional financial health.

With a consistently high bond rating, the county is better prepared than ever to fund critical projects and services, according to Megan Magnetta, spokeswoman for the commissioners. This financial stability creates a strong foundation for long-term success and allows for strategic investments.

Infrastructure remains a top priority for the commissioners and the results are evident, she says. The 0.25% road tax generated over $9.1 million in funding that is allocated exclusively to road and bridge engineering and construction costs, with no funds used for county personnel.

In partnership with the Mahoning County Veterans Commission and the Western Reserve Port Authority, the commissioners announced plans for a new Veterans Commission Center in Youngstown. The 23,000-square-foot center, to be built on Belmont Avenue next to the Carl Nunziato Veterans Administrative Building, represents a $7 million investment. With $650,000 in state capital funding secured, this center will provide essential services and resources to local veterans.

Looking ahead, projects funded by the American Rescue Plan Act will continue to materialize in 2025. More than $44 million has been spent or allocated for projects that will enhance public infrastructure, health care and community services, Magnetta says.

The commissioners are focused on advancing initiatives such as Valley Vision 2050, an economic development plan that emphasizes regional collaboration, workforce recruitment, and business retention.
