CANFIELD, Ohio – The Mahoning County Career & Technical Center and Valley STEM Academy, in partnership with their National Technical Honor Society, will host R U OK? Day, a schoolwide mental health and wellness event designed to support and empower more than 1,000 students who attend MCCTC and Valley STEM.

R U OK? Day, which will take place from noon to 2 p.m. May 15 at MCCTC, focuses on fostering connection, encouraging meaningful conversations and equipping students with practical tools to support their mental well-being. The initiative is inspired by the global R U OK? movement that began in Australia and has made an impact in communities worldwide. Though similar efforts have been implemented at institutions such as The Ohio State University, this is the first event of its kind in the local area, a news release states.

MCCTC and Valley STEM are seeking local mental health professionals, wellness organizations and community partners to volunteer their time and services for the day.

Participants can get involved in a variety of ways, including:

  • Leading hands-on, workshop-style sessions focused on self-care, stress management and positive coping strategies.
  • Hosting interactive activities that promote relaxation and fun.
  • Setting up a resource table to share information and connect students with ongoing services.

Planned activities already include sessions such as Pure Barre fitness, breathing and relaxation techniques, mini golf, a car smash experience and more, all designed to help students learn healthy ways to manage stress in an engaging environment.

The event will also feature a mental health fair, connecting students with local resources and organizations committed to supporting youth mental health.

The goal is to create a “mental health toolbox” for students, giving them strategies they can carry beyond the school day.

“This event is about more than just asking, ‘Are you OK?’ – it’s about teaching students how to truly support one another,” said Lauren Mechling, MCCTC and Valley STEM guidance counselor. “With the help of our community, we can make a lasting impact on the well-being of our students.”
