YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Char Gardiner, president of Mercy Health – St. Joseph Warren Hospital, provides an update on construction progress at the new Mercy Health – Champion Emergency Care Center, announcing the project is not only on schedule but slightly ahead.

Gardiner says steel framing is already in place at the site between the Trumbull Career & Technical Center and Kent State University at Trumbull, with crews working quickly to weather-tighten the structure before winter.

As part of the celebration, a 12-foot steel beam was brought into St. Joseph Warren Hospital on Thursday for a blessing and signing ceremony. Gardiner invited associates to leave their signatures as a symbol of support and excitement for the new facility. The beam, once filled with names, will be permanently installed in the Champion building.

The emergency care center – targeted for a winter 2026 opening – will provide 24/7 emergency services, along with imaging and laboratory capabilities. Gardiner notes that the project is part of a long-term strategy to expand access to care across Trumbull County and the northern part of Mercy’s service area.
