CHAMPION TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Site work should begin within 60 days on a new emergency room for Mercy Health on land near the Kent State University at Trumbull campus, a township official confirmed Monday.

“The project is going to be a 30,000-square-foot stand-alone facility,” said Doug Emerine, township trustee. “Champion has issued a building permit,” he added, noting the project could begin in the next two months.

Emerine said the new facility should employ approximately 75 people and contain 25 beds.

Initially, Mercy Health had planned to construct a full-service hospital at the site, but that project never materialized. The new emergency center would be located at 570 Educational Highway NW on 68 acres.

The original plan called for a $500 million investment to construct a 400,000-square-foot hospital with 241 beds, according to Business Journal records.

This new project would feature an emergency center and “scaled way back” from the initial plan, Emerine said. Officials have estimated the costs to be approximately $30 million.

The Mahoning Valley has recently been rocked by the closure of Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull in Warren and Insight Rehabilitation Hospital Hillside in Howland, formerly owned by Steward Health Care System and recently acquired by Insight Health System.

“We’re glad they selected Champion, and we look forward to having them in the community,” Emerine said of Mercy Health.
