YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Jasmine Phillips, prevention specialist at Meridian HealthCare, and Brandy Bates, gambling treatment coordinator at Meridian, discussed the growing rise of gambling across Ohio and how Meridian is working to provide prevention, education and treatment resources throughout the region.
Phillips said the expansion of sports betting in Ohio has dramatically increased access to gambling, especially through mobile apps and online platforms, creating new concerns involving younger users and underage betting.
She also highlighted how gambling behaviors are increasingly appearing in online games, sports cards and “mystery box” purchases, exposing children and teenagers to gambling-style risks earlier than ever before.
Bates said Meridian offers free gambling treatment services in Mahoning and Trumbull counties through a state-funded grant program, helping individuals and families dealing with gambling addiction and related mental health, financial and substance use issues.
The organization also partners with community agencies and Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course to provide outreach, education and resources aimed at promoting responsible gambling and connecting people with support services.
Both said awareness and education remain critical as gambling opportunities continue expanding through sports betting, online platforms and digital technologies across Ohio.
