HARRISBURG, Pa. – More than $9.5 million in state funding has been approved to improve drinking water infrastructure in New Castle.
The funding, awarded by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, will allow Pennsylvania American Water Company to move forward with a project aimed at replacing aging water mains, enhancing service reliability and improving water quality for residents and businesses. This funding consists of a $3,962,140 low-interest loan of 1% and a $5,565,850 grant.
“This funding is an investment in the future of New Castle,” said state Sen. Michele Brooks, R-50. “Dependable infrastructure is about more than replacing pipes – it’s about supporting families, attracting new employers and ensuring our communities remain strong for the future. Reliable waterlines can also assist our fire departments in responding to fire emergencies. I also understand how expensive these projects are, and I hope this funding will help offset additional costs to residents.”
The project includes the replacement of outdated water lines, installation of new valves and hydrants and upgrades to improve system performance and long-term reliability.
Brooks also announced the approval of $12.7 million in state funding to support critical wastewater infrastructure improvements for the Meadville Area Sewer Authority in Crawford County.
That funding also was approved by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority during its April board meeting and will be used for significant upgrades to the area’s aging sewer system, which serves thousands of residents and businesses in Meadville and surrounding communities. The funding is comprised of a $5,044,299 low-interest 1% loan and a $7,675,701 grant.
The project includes improvements that will enhance the efficiency of the sewer system, reduce overflow and infiltration problems and help bring the system into compliance with state and federal regulations.
