The planned renovation of the former Niles Masonic Temple building and a riverfront revitalization project both will contribute to downtown revitalization efforts, Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz said.
The projects, both underway in 2025, are being funded by $3.5 million from the state’s Appalachian Community Grant program, awarded to Niles in May 2024 as part of its Wonderful Waterfronts initiative.
Gatta Construction purchased the former temple in late 2023, just blocks away from where Niles Public Square is being constructed on the site of the former Robins Theatre at the intersection of South Main Street and West State Street. Developer Dominic Gatta said in August he expects to have the building ready for occupancy late in the first quarter of 2026 or early in the second quarter.
Niles Public Square will feature a stage for small performances and concerts, with a mix of both permanent and temporary seating, parking spaces and electrical connections for food trucks and a letter sculpture of the city’s name.
Riverfront Park, which will be located just southeast of the viaduct, will have a launch area, an outdoor educational pavilion and nature play and furniture pieces.
