The Business Journal’s coverage of record oil production from horizontal wells in Columbiana County’s Utica/Point Pleasant shale formation attracted widespread readership in 2025.
In March, The Business Journal reported that wells drilled by Encino Acquisition Partners’ Ohio affiliate produced more than 1.5 million barrels of oil in 2024, a new record for the region. Houston-based EOG Resources has since acquired the assets of Encino.
Columbiana County’s wells are on track for another promising year. Through the third quarter of 2025, the county’s wells have produced more than 1.12 million barrels of oil. Moreover, a well in southern Mahoning County has demonstrated signs of strong oil production.
