HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation approved nearly $3 million in Multimodal Transportation Fund grants for two infrastructure projects in Mercer County aimed at improving transportation safety, supporting economic development and jobs and enhancing quality of life.
The city of Hermitage will receive $2,046,800 to rehabilitate roads in the Wheatland Industrial Area, which is home to more than 30 businesses employing several hundred workers.
“The city of Hermitage is grateful to Gov. [Josh] Shapiro’s administration for making this critical infrastructure investment, and to [state] Sen. Michele Brooks for her assistance in securing the funding,” said Gary Hinkson, Hermitage city manager. “This project will deliver essential road and stormwater improvements needed to support and sustain commerce in the industrial area of Hermitage’s Wheatland neighborhood.”
The city of Sharon will receive $694,711 to support greenspace development along the East Silver Street riverfront, enhancing public access and revitalizing the area.
In total, 54 highway, bridge, bike and pedestrian projects in 34 counties across Pennsylvania were selected for more than $47 million in funding through the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which provides grant funding to municipalities, councils of governments, businesses, economic development organizations, public transportation agencies and ports and rail freight entities to improve transportation assets that enhance communities, pedestrian safety and transit access.
“Infrastructure is essential to Pennsylvania’s growth and to connecting people with opportunity,” Shapiro said. “When we invest in safer roads, bridges, ports and transit, we’re creating jobs, strengthening local economies and making it easier for people to get where they need to go – whether that’s to work, school or a small business on Main Street. These projects deliver real results for communities across the commonwealth and keep Pennsylvania moving forward safely and efficiently, no matter how they get around.”
