WASHINGTON – Three federal officials from Ohio have sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to urge a formal investigation into the legality and transparency of the recent closures of two Trumbull County hospitals.
In their letter, U.S. Reps. Michael Rulli, R-6th, and Dave Joyce, R-14th, along with U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, raised concerns about the potential misuse of public funds and lack of clear, accurate communications to local officials and hospital staff.
“Given your experience and ongoing advocacy for public accountability, we respectfully ask that your office or an appropriate investigative body consider evaluating the legality of the events that led to the subsequent closures,” the letter states. “If fraud or abuse played any part in this outcome, it is essential that those responsible be held accountable. The citizens of Mahoning Valley deserve answers, and we must work collectively to ensure that such closures are not allowed to proceed without rigorous scrutiny.”
Insight Health System acquired the former Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren and the former Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland from bankrupt Steward Health Care System in October 2024. Insight closed both hospitals in March, citing a lack of payments from Steward that were required under its bankruptcy proceedings.
Earlier this month, U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, met with Trumbull County commissioners and other officials about the closures. He predicted Insight would step aside and another operator would be brought in to run the hospitals, now named Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull and Insight Rehabilitation Hospital Hillside.
