WARREN, Ohio – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said he met with Insight Health Systems officials Tuesday and plans are in the works to reopen the two closed hospitals in Trumbull County.

“Our meeting with Insight’s leadership team produced fruitful discussions on how the AG’s office can work with them to facilitate full operational control,” Yost said in a news release. “This is about saving lives and strengthening communities.”

Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull in Warren and Insight Rehabilitation Hospital Hillside in Howland closed in late March.

Insight acquired the two hospitals through Steward Health Care System’s bankruptcy, filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston in May 2024.

Insight’s acquisition of the hospitals stopped a 30-day closure notice by Steward issued Aug. 21, 2024. But in March, a closure notice was placed on the door at the Warren hospital.

At the time of closure, Insight had indicated the “abrupt developments” in Steward’s bankruptcy had led to a lack of transferred dollars owed for services delivered at both hospitals. It also indicated the plan remains in place to redesign the hospitals’ operations fully independent of Steward.

Although there has appeared to be little movement since late March, Yost said Insight continues to plan for a reopening. No details of the plan or a timeline have been released at this time.

Local officials have asked both state and federal officials to investigate Steward’s handling of funds and the events that led to the closure of the facilities.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, in May met with Trumbull County commissioners and predicted that Insight would be stepping aside and a new operator would be found to operate the hospitals. Moreno also said at that time Medical Properties Trust, the owner of the hospital real estate, had “come to the table with a very generous offer” to transition the property to another operator.
