WARREN, Ohio – Work should get underway soon to remediate five former gas station sites in Trumbull County, a Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership representative said.
Bids are out for demolition and remediation work at the five sites, said Gillian Costantino, environmental programs coordinator at TNP. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Division of Environmental Response and Revitalization is funding the work, which initial projections show will cost a combined $2.5 million for the five sites.
A TNP news release distributed Wednesday identified the five sites: 2855 Tod Ave SW, Warren; 3624 Main St., Mineral Ridge; 165 E. Main St., West Farmington; 2904 Belmont Ave., Liberty; and 1426 Niles Road SE, Warren.
The cleanups can proceed “rather quickly” because the funding is in place, Costantino said. Once the bidders are selected and put under contract, they will be able to begin work on the sites.
“These blighted sites have been hazards to their communities in some cases for decades, and the allocation of this funding will allow them to once again become productive parts of Trumbull County,” she said.
“We are very grateful to Ohio EPA for pushing these cleanups forward. Most of them have been blights on their communities for a very long time, and it is important for us to have them ready for development or whatever their next best use is,” Matt Martin, TNP executive director, affirmed.
No end users are in place for the sites once remediated, but TNP has kept records of individuals who have expressed interest so they can be contacted once the properties are ready to be sold, Costantino said. Redevelopment proposals are expected to differ from site to site.
“Because all of the properties are on main roadways throughout the county, our goal is to make them ready for any type of economic redevelopment that would benefit the surrounding communities,” she said.
