Two summer experiences are available to Ohio Appalachian students and STEM teachers through the Appalachian Regional Commission for free, including travel, lodging and meals. 

These competitive, hands-on academies bring students and educators from across Appalachia together for real-world learning and career exploration. 

The Appalachian Entrepreneurship Academy will be held July 11-24, 2026, at Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C. The program will allow high school students to develop, refine and pitch their own business ideas to real entrepreneurs; build leadership, teamwork and innovation skills; and participate in a live pitch competition. The Appalachian STEM Academy at Oak Ridge will be held July 11-17 and July 18-24, 2026, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Middle school students and high school students and STEM teachers will have an opportunity to work with leading scientists on hands-on research projects and explore real-world careers in science, engineering and technology. Teachers will partner with practitioners to develop innovative STEM curriculum. The application deadline is Dec. 3. For more information and to apply, click HERE.

Included in the programs are round-trip travel, lodging and meals, all program materials, extracurricular and enrichment activities and access to mentors and career professionals.

Participants are encouraged to bring some extra money for incidental expenses or souvenirs, if desired.
