YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – What began as an effort to support breast cancer care in the Mahoning Valley has grown into one of the region’s largest fundraising events.
Now in its 17th year, Panerathon brings thousands of people together for a 10K and 2-mile walk and run, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at Mercy Health. The event raised $700,000 last year, bringing its total impact to nearly $6 million.
The money raised has helped expand access to breast cancer care close to home, including the purchase of a mobile 3D mammography unit that has provided more than 100,000 breast exams since 2016. The unit travels to 25 locations each month, bringing screenings to women who may have difficulty getting to the center.
Panerathon also supports Joanie’s Promise, which helps patients receive breast care regardless of their ability to pay.
Organizers say the event has become more than a fundraiser, bringing together survivors, families, volunteers and community members while helping make early detection and treatment more accessible across the Valley.
