YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University football coach Doug Phillips says veteran leadership and mental toughness are driving the Penguins heading into the 2025 season. With fourth-year players leading meetings and setting the tone, Phillips emphasizes discipline, accountability and strong habits as keys to success.

Quarterback Beau Brungard notes growth in film study and decision-making, while defensive back DJ Harris, a Division II transfer, highlights improved communication and leadership on defense. Phillips praised the impact of transfers across all levels, citing past and current success stories.
