WARREN, Ohio – During an appearance on the “It’s All About the Team” podcast, hosted by Jim Tressel, P.J. Fleck, coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team, shared the deeply personal story behind his well-known “Row the Boat” mantra.
Fleck explained that the phrase originated during one of the most difficult periods of his life, following the loss of his infant son, Colton, in 2011. Holding his son as he died, Fleck said he made a promise to create something meaningful that could impact others and bring people together.
The philosophy later became the foundation of his leadership approach when he began his head coaching career, first unveiling it publicly during his time at Western Michigan. Fleck described “Row the Boat” as a visual metaphor for life and teamwork — everyone aligned and moving forward together, never giving up despite adversity.
“When you row a boat, your back’s to the future — you’re rowing in the present, but looking at the past,” Fleck said, noting the idea reflects learning from past experiences while continuing to move forward.
Today, the phrase represents more than a football slogan for the Minnesota program. Fleck said the movement is tied to charitable efforts supporting children’s health care and serves as a reminder that leadership is about impacting the lives of others.
