YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Friday the 13th will be a good day to tie the knot.

Couples who want to get married or simply renew their vows can do so Friday, Feb. 13, in an unusual pop-up wedding ceremony at Penguin City Brewing. 

The public event, dubbed Til Death Do Us Part, will take place at the downtown brewery and taproom. Couples will be able to get married – provided they have a valid marriage license – or renew their vows in a unique way.

The brewery describes it as a fun way to say “I do” without the stress of wedding planning. 

Romantics can also keep in mind that the next day will be Valentine’s Day.

Till Death Do Us Part is ideal for couples looking to elope, renew vows or make their commitment official in a memorable yet approachable way, according to a press release. All of the participating couples will be married in a single ceremony, according to Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki, co-owner of Penguin City.

The wedding package is $100 and includes the marriage ceremony, a short photo session and a celebratory toast with a choice of champagne, beer or a nonalcoholic cocktail. 

Ceremonies will be officiated by Hannah Ferguson, who is the owner of DOPE Cidery, next to the brewery at East Federal Street and Andrews Avenue. She is a state-authorized officiant.

Couples can further personalize their experience with optional add-on packages, including:

  • Bouquet: $30.
  • Boutonniere: $12.
  • Mini cake for two: $20.

Suzie’s for Two, a shared meal option featuring food by Suzie’s, will also be available.

The wedding ceremony will start at 7 p.m., with a toast at 7:30 p.m.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the taproom will also be open to the public.

Tickets for the pop-up wedding ceremony can be purchased on Eventbrite.

A curated lineup of local vendors will be set up at the event, including flash tattoos by Aqua Ink, Honeyprint stickers and jewelry makers.

“I’ve seen pop-up wedding ceremonies in bigger cities, and I’ve always wanted to bring that kind of fun energy to Penguin City,” Lyras-Bernacki said.

“Couples can come in, get married, enjoy cake, a toast and professional photos all for under $200. It’s an affordable, unique and totally memorable way to say ‘I do.’”

The event happens to fall on the day before Valentine’s Day, but the theme is Friday the 13th, Lyras-Bernacki said. That’s because Penguin City is partnering with Aqua Ink for its  Friday the 13th flash tattoos.

“It’s not horror-themed,” she said. “It’s more of a fun, playful nod to that day’s tattoo culture.”

A flash tattoo is a small, predesigned tattoo that is quickly applied. A sheet of several designs will be brought to the event, and recipients can choose one of those options.

“They’re not all the same tattoo, and they’re not necessarily scary,” Lyras Bernacki said. “They’re just part of the Friday the 13th flash tattoo tradition.”
