Potential Development School for Students with Autism welcomed 325 students back to the classroom for the 2025–2026 academic year, representing the highest enrollment in the school’s history and underscoring the growing demand for specialized autism education within our community.
As awareness of the importance of individualized, evidence-based instruction continues to rise, Potential Development remains committed to expanding and maximizing its facilities to ensure that as many families as possible can access these critical services, according to Crissi Jenkins, chief growth officer.
Since its founding in 1953, Potential Development has supported children with developmental delays, with a specific focus on autism. What began as a half-day preschool program serving just 20 children grew into a comprehensive educational system spanning three buildings and serving students from pre-K through 12th grade. The organization is supported by a professional staff of more than 160.
Potential Development serves students from 33 school districts across Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Jefferson and Stark counties. In July 2025, 11 students earned their high school diplomas, and 19 students are expected to graduate in 2026, marking the largest graduating class in the school’s history. With this milestone, Potential Development will celebrate a growing alumni community of more than 130 graduates.
“Potential Development is honored to play a vital role in our community by helping children with autism reach their full potential,” says CEO Paul Garchar. “In collaboration with families and community partners, we recognize and nurture each child’s individual strengths while continuing our commitment to delivering the education, resources and opportunities that allow them to grow, thrive and succeed.”
Beyond its multifaceted curriculum, Potential Development offers on-site speech, occupational and physical therapy, mental health services, and a range of student support, including guidance counseling, transition assistance and a licensed social worker.
