YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Potential Development School for Students with Autism last year achieved its largest enrollment increase in school history.

With more than 320 students returning for the 2024-25 academic year, demand for the school’s specialized autism education programs has never been higher, according to Crissi Jenkins, chief growth officer.

To meet this surge, the school expanded classroom space, ramped up staff recruitment, and launched a strategic plan to accommodate growth.

Since 1953, Potential Development has provided services to children with developmental delays, specifically those with autism.

What began as a half-day preschool program with 20 children has evolved into a comprehensive school system spanning three buildings, serving students from pre-K through 12th grade with a staff of nearly 150.

“Potential Development is proud to be a cornerstone of our community, dedicated to empowering children with autism,” says CEO Paul Garchar.

The 18% spike in enrollment represents students from three counties and more than 30 school districts, according to Garchar.

In 2024, 14 students earned their high school diplomas, each following unique pathways to graduation.

Several milestones defined growth in 2024:

  • Installation of a workout gym at the elementary/middle school.
  • A redesigned logo and website.
  • Updated sensory rooms.
  • New classrooms at all three sites.
  • Launch of an alumni group.

Garchar says other key initiatives included increasing grant funding, strengthening relationships with local government officials, and expanding resources and support for students.
