BOARDMAN, Ohio – MKC Inc. started as an organization that hosted birthday parties for homeless and sick children and has expanded to serve more than 25,000 children annually through several programs.
Jenny Kennedy started the Boardman-based organization in 2010.
“Today, the organization has expanded significantly, employing four staff members and distributing over 7 million diapers,” says Shelly Marlowe, its co-president.
It’s earned multiple awards and recognition for its efforts, she points out. Those include the agency of the year award from the National Association of Social Workers Ohio Region IV, the Helping Hands award from the Boardman School District, a child advocate award from Akron Children’s Hospital, and a community spotlight award from Mahoning County Children Services.
“In 2024, the organization was featured on the ‘Disney Parks’ Magical Christmas Day Parade’ on ABC, highlighting its impact on the community,” Marlowe says.
The Project MKC diaper bank distributes over 125,000 diapers and 250,000 wipes each month, filling a gap in social services, Marlowe says.
Personalized bags of comfort items are given to children undergoing chemotherapy at Akron Children’s Hospital. And more than 1,200 comfort kits are given annually to children across 10 counties who are entering foster care.
The organization has distributed more than 9,000 pairs of boots and socks to children in need.
And in 2024, Project MKC adopted 130 local families, providing gifts and food to 425 children during the holiday season.
Marlowe explains that Project MKC focuses primarily on underserved children, working to promote self-worth and confidence. It partners with 90 agencies in northeastern Ohio to ensure its resources reach those who need them most.
Financial transparency is a priority, according to Marlowe.
“One of the distinguishing features of Project MKC is its commitment to ensuring that 100% of every donation directly supports its programs,” she says. “The organization’s office rent, utilities and payroll are covered by two dedicated donors, ensuring all contributions go to helping children and families.”
