WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Michael Rulli of Salem this week introduced the Wireless Broadband Competition and Efficient Deployment Act to help bridge the nation’s digital divide, especially in underserved rural areas.

“This bill would eliminate burdensome reviews that are often repetitive and slow down broadband expansion,” Rulli, R-6th, said in a news release. “We need reliable broadband, and we need it fast.”

Rulli said he sponsored the legislation to remove unnecessary requirements when upgrading or adding wireless facilities to existing infrastructure. He said these regulations often create unnecessary obstacles, delaying the rollout of critical broadband access to communities that need it most.

The bill aims to allow broadband providers to mount or install personal wireless service facilities – such as antennas, transmitting devices and related equipment – on existing personal wireless service facilities at the time of an authorization request. Additionally, it seeks to permit modifications to existing personal wireless service facilities.

“Reliable broadband is the lifeline for growth in rural communities like mine, unlocking vital opportunities for businesses, schools and families,” Rulli said. “The economic future of Eastern Ohio and rural America is on the line – we cannot afford delays. The House must act now and pass this urgent legislation.”
