YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A new scoreboard at Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium will offer four times the resolution of the previous board.
LED3 of Canfield was expected to complete installation of the new scoreboard by early August.
“It’s four times the resolution,” says Clare Neff, LED3 president. “It’s going to look like a TV screen – that’s the big deal.”
It will enhance the spectator experience, she adds.
The old board was 672-by-384 pixels compared to the new one’s 1,632-by-960 pixels, says Brian Barry, LED3 technical operations manager.
“It’s going to look amazing,” he says.
An email last month from a university spokeswoman said the new board will provide enhanced resolution, offering spectators higher quality video and entertainment. The cost is $253,441, most of which was covered by the university’s new Pepsi contract, according to the spokeswoman.
Barry says the pixels have a lens on them that enhances horizontal and vertical visibility. That contrasts with many similar outdoor features that have shaders that limit the view.
LED3 installed the previous Stambaugh Stadium scoreboard in 2015.
Last year, the company replaced a section of the scoreboard at YSU’s Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center, retrofitting a section to improving its resolution four-fold as well. That enhanced the video elements displayed on the screen.
“That is the wow factor if you go into the Zidian Family Arena compared to what it was before,” Barry says.
LED3 does installation projects all over the country and has expanded internationally with a project in Amsterdam and one in Germany later this year.
“We love the fact that we can work locally in our backyard pretty much,” Neff says. “And it’s really great to partner with a facility like YSU.”
