HOWLAND, Ohio – A Mahoning Valley museum has a new signature piece.

The Medici Museum of Art this week installed on its front lawn a superrealistic statue of monumental scale by American sculptor Carole A. Feuerman.

The 6-foot bronze statue, “Poseidon,” with a green patina will remain on the lawn permanently, greeting passersby on East Market Street. It was installed Tuesday with a large crane.

Feuerman created the piece in 2023. Her eyecatching pieces can also be seen in a separate exhibition on display inside the museum.

Feuerman pioneered the superrealism movement, which she helped establish in the late 1970s. She is widely known for her lifelike figurative works, particularly those depicting swimmers and dancers.

Feuerman’s art is held in collections in 34 museums worldwide.

“Poseidon” is a testament to Feuerman’s artistic vision and mastery, and promises to be a highlight of the museum’s collection, according to Katelynn Amendolara-Russo, executive director of the museum.

It replaces a previous work by Feuerman titled “Monumental Quan,” which was removed after it was sold.

In 2011, Feuerman founded the Carole A. Feuerman Sculpture Foundation to support and promote the art of sculpture.

An exhibition of works put together by the foundation will premiere at the Medici this spring.

“Zodiac: Mysterious Power of the Creative” will open April 12. Curated by Amendolara-Russo, the exhibition builds upon the theme of the zodiac, as perceived by the artists selected for the show.

It will be complemented by a panel discussion with well-known guest artists and curators.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a simultaneous showcase of five to eight celebrity artists, including Pilar Zeta and Barbara Siegel, in a separate gallery. This portion of the exhibition will travel to other museums for exhibition, Amendolara-Russo said.
