Shenango Chamber Hosts Fitness Fest Aug. 11

HERMITAGE, Pa. – The Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the inaugural Shenango Valley Fitness Fest and Wellness Expo 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at Buhl Park here.

The event, held in partnership with the Mercer County Cancer Coalition, will include fitness demonstrations, health screenings and 5K and 10K races. Admission is a back-to-school item or $1 per person, with all donations benefiting students in need through Primary Health Network Charitable Foundation.

“Exhibitors will be on site to provide screenings and showcase their health-related products and healthcare services,” said Sherris Moreira, executive director of the chamber, adding that fitness guru Breanna Griffin of Anytime Fitness in Hermitage will be curating the fitness demonstrations on the casino’s veranda near Lake Julia. Presentations will include yoga, karate, ballroom dancing and more.

In addition, fitness vendors with pop-up tents, food vendors and a farmer’s market will be set up near the casino.

“Guests can talk with trainers and healthcare professionals; try out fitness experiences and sample delicious, healthy foods,” Moreira said.

The event was conceived from a conversation between the Shenango Valley Chamber and the cancer coalition, a subsidiary of Community Health Partnership of Mercer County, to find ways to promote healthful lifestyles in Mercer County.

“This is a great opportunity to bring together healthcare and health conscious organizations with the community to create a dialogue around the importance of healthy living,” said Kristen Hillebrand, health systems manager for the northeast region of the American Cancer Society.

The 5K and 10K begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Avalon at Buhl Park Country Club. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and race participants will receive a T-shirt and a food voucher to be redeemed at the food truck rally inside the Fitness Fest. Though the 5K/10K is a separate fundraiser for the Fraternal Order of Police Rose of Sharon Lodge No. 3 and Primary Health Network Charitable Foundation, it is part of the overall Fitness Fest list of events and open to the public, Moreira explained.

Restaurants at the Avalon at Buhl Park will be open to the public with no member fees.
