“Shredded,” a movie written and directed by Adam Michael of Youngstown, is now available to rent ($2.99) or buy ($9.99) on Amazon.com and other streaming sites.

The drama stars Youngstown actor Makayla McIntosh and Anthony Dain of Columbus, who play characters going through major health challenges.

Shot in New York City and the Mahoning Valley, the movie got its world premiere in April 2024 at Main Street Theater in Columbiana (now known as Columbiana Arts Theater). It clocks in at 1:46.

“We are so proud of the film and all the work done by the cast and crew to help bring the story to life,” Michael said, adding the feedback he has received has been “super positive.”

In an interview last year, the director said the script was personal to him and McIntosh.

Michael underwent a battle with cancer a few years ago. McIntosh was a dancer who was forced to change her career plans after she was severely injured in a bicycle accident.

The story revolves around the characters Riley (McIntosh) and Logan (Dain), who meet at a surfing camp. Each realizes the other is going through a life-changing ordeal, and they eventually open up to each other.

“There is anger and arguments,” Michael said. “She’s bitter. He hides everything behind humor but on the inside is very scared and angry.”

Filming took place in 2023 at Rockaway Beach in New York City and various locations in the Mahoning Valley, including Nova Coffee in downtown Warren and the medical office of Boardman pediatrician John Cox, who is also the president of the board of the Youngstown Playhouse.

Rounding out the cast are New York actors Danielle Braund, Cat Yudain and Jacque Horton II.

Michael also served as cinematographer.

McIntosh said making the movie was cathartic for her, and she hopes it helps others get through tough times.

“So many people have said to me they are also going through a life change and don’t know how to move on or find meaning,” she said in a 2024 interview. “With this film, we want people to know they are not alone.”

Michael is currently involved in another project. On Sunday, April 13, he will direct a reading of the play “Faith Healer” by Brian Friel at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, 1105 Elm St. Admission is $5.

The reading will begin with a virtual introduction and conversation with acclaimed film and TV actor Austin Pendleton, who is a Warren native.

“Faith Healer” is about the life of Francis Hardy, who was a faith healer. It is told as a monologue by his wife and the stage manager.

The cast features Cox in the title role, with Brett Sullivan Santry and Jennifer Ruth.
