BOARDMAN, Ohio – The ownership group of Southern Park Mall has paid its outstanding real estate tax charges for this year, according to the Mahoning County Treasurer’s Office.

Treasurer Dan Yemma confirmed Monday that Southern Park Mall Realty Holding LLC, a subsidiary of New York-based Kohan Retail Investment Group, electronically wired “liquid funds” totaling $1,063,789.40 to the treasurer’s office Dec. 19. The payments covered tax year 2024 that was payable in 2025.

“As such, all seven parcels under the Southern Park Mall umbrella are paid current including all penalties and interest,” Yemma said in a statement released to the press.

The properties are now due for first-half collection in March 2026, he added.

The Business Journal in April reported that Kohan had missed its first-half tax payments of 2025. Records show it also missed a deadline for second-half payments that were due in August.

Kohan attempted to pay at least three times on the bill, only to have those payments rejected because of insufficient funds.

“These funds were wired, which is different from what they did before,” Yemma said. Before, the taxes were attempted to be paid with an electronic check. “They contacted us last week, and there seemed to be a sense of urgency.”

Yemma sent a copy of the tax bill to Kohan on Wednesday for each parcel, accompanied with instructions on how to wire the funds directly to the treasurer’s office. On Friday, the funds were wired.

County and township officials have expressed frustration over the past nine months in their attempts to contact Kohan and discuss the group’s tax liabilities. On Friday, the mall announced a new general manager and said it had brought its taxes up to date. 

The mall’s previous general manager, Vincent Tyler, resigned in early November after his staff and employees were not paid on time the previous week. The matter led to a temporary closure of the mall Nov. 3. 

Earlier last week, Boardman Township trustees sent a letter to Ohio Attorney General David Yost requesting his office investigate Kohan.
