YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital has officially unveiled its new neurointensive care unit, a major investment aimed at meeting the region’s growing need for advanced neurological and stroke care. Kathy Harley, president and CEO of St. Elizabeth Youngstown, and Martin Tursky, chief operating officer, say the new unit reflects both community demand and a long-term commitment to keeping high-acuity care local.

Hospital leaders note that the Mahoning Valley’s aging population and higher incidence of neurological conditions made the expansion essential. The neurointensive care unit is part of a broader, multimillion-dollar investment in neuroscience services, which also includes new neuro-interventional radiology suites and a recently opened acute rehabilitation hospital developed in partnership with Lifepoint.

Tursky emphasized that time-sensitive conditions like stroke require immediate, specialized care. The new unit allows patients to be treated, monitored and transitioned into rehabilitation without leaving the community – significantly improving outcomes and recovery.

Harley added that the neurointensive care unit is built around a multidisciplinary, family-centered approach, bringing together neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurointerventionists, nurses and support staff to deliver coordinated, high-level care.

Hospital officials said the expansion positions St. Elizabeth Youngstown as a regional leader in neuroscience care while ensuring patients and families have access to critical services close to home.
