BOARDMAN, Ohio – Southwoods Health announced Thursday that the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods has earned accreditation through the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, becoming the only accredited bariatric surgery program in Mahoning County.
The Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program is a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
“This accreditation establishes Southwoods as a leading provider of care for individuals living with obesity and obesity-related conditions,” said Ed Muransky, CEO of Southwoods. “The focus is on improving patient health and quality of life through personalized weight loss care.”
The Southwoods Center for Comprehensive Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery was created to address the complex needs of individuals struggling with obesity, offering both medical and surgical weight loss solutions. Knowing each patient has a unique set of circumstances, the Southwoods team focuses on delivering personalized care using a multidisciplinary approach that includes nutrition counseling, medical weight management and bariatric surgical options.
“Being recognized by the MBSAQIP and becoming an ACS Surgical Quality Partner highlights our commitment to delivering quality, safe, patient-centered care,” said Dr. Brandon Dessecker, medical director at the Southwoods Center for Comprehensive Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery. “We are very proud of our staff, whose hard work and dedication to providing the best care possible is unmatched.”
The MBSAQIP is a comprehensive, nationwide quality program designed to ensure the safe and effective performance of metabolic and bariatric surgery. Surgical outcomes focus on weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, sleep apnea and others.
As an MBSAQIP-accredited hospital, Southwoods is also recognized as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner – a distinction that reflects a hospital’s dedication to consistently improving procedures and approaches, while maintaining a critical eye on processes.
With the continued growth of the program, Southwoods expanded its surgical team. Dr. Joseph Martin has joined Dessecker, bringing additional experience and expertise in advanced bariatric surgical techniques.
“With the continued growth of the program, we have expanded our surgical team,” Muransky said. “Dr. Joseph Martin has joined Dr. Dessecker, enhancing the high-quality care we offer to our patients.”
