AKRON, Ohio – Thomas Milo, CEO of TKM Ballistics, demonstrates his company’s technology by striking an inflatable ballistic shield with a baseball bat, producing little visible impact on the person holding it. Milo says the shields, made from layered polymer fibers and proprietary bonding materials, are designed to absorb force from high-powered rounds without causing injury, allowing users to remain mobile in active shooter situations.

Based in Cuyahoga Falls, TKM Ballistics manufactures lightweight rigid and inflatable shields for law enforcement and military use, with additional applications in schools. The company is among nine startups selected for the Synthe6 Materials Accelerator, a yearlong program at Bounce Innovation Hub in Akron that provides funding, mentorship and business support to polymer and materials science ventures.
