WARREN, Ohio – Winning teams aren’t built by changing who you are. Former Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta says great leaders succeed by staying authentic and earning their players’ trust.
Matta joined host Jim Tressel on the “It’s All About the Team” podcast to discuss the leadership principles that helped him build successful programs at Butler, Xavier and Ohio State.
Matta says one of the keys to his coaching philosophy is authenticity. Rather than changing after becoming a head coach, he focused on leading with the same energy, personality and hands-on approach that defined him as an assistant coach. He says players respond best when coaches are genuine and willing to work alongside their teams.
Drawing from lessons in former NBA coach Phil Jackson’s “Sacred Hoops,” Matta explains the importance of seeing challenges through a player’s perspective. He says effective coaches balance accountability with empathy, helping athletes overcome adversity while pushing them to reach their full potential.
Matta also reflects on today’s college athletics landscape, saying growth often comes through overcoming setbacks rather than avoiding them. He believes strong relationships, trust and consistency remain the foundation of successful teams and effective leadership.
