After losing his job in media, Warren Anderson built one of the nation’s top food distribution companies by focusing on people, performance and accountability.

Anderson, CEO of the Anderson-DuBose Co., discusses his unconventional path from journalism and media sales into business ownership and how that journey leads to the growth of a company that now operates multiple distribution centers serving major brands including McDonald’s and Chipotle.

Anderson says he entered the distribution industry through a leveraged buyout in 1991 after identifying processing, packaging and distribution as sectors where he could create value without entering retail or manufacturing. Relationships developed through McDonald’s helped launch the business, which grew from serving northeastern Ohio to operating facilities across several states and internationally.

He attributes the company’s success to a collaborative management style that encourages employees to help establish goals and take ownership of results. Anderson says the company maintains some of the highest performance metrics in the McDonald’s distribution network, with multiple industry awards recognizing operational excellence and customer service.

Rather than relying on top-down leadership, Anderson emphasizes teamwork, accountability and a shared commitment to being the best-performing operation in the industry. He says delivering products accurately, on time and at the proper temperature remains the foundation of customer satisfaction.

Anderson also discusses employee retention and loyalty, pointing to the company’s decision not to lay off workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, employees who needed time away kept their benefits, while others were provided work opportunities.

He says that approach strengthened trust and helped establish Anderson-DuBose as an employer of choice. Today, Anderson says his motivation remains creating an environment where employees earn strong wages, receive quality benefits and build long-term careers while helping the company continue its growth.
