YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An annual exhibition of works by the region’s best artists will return next month.
The Area Artist Annual, a curated exhibition presented by The Butler Institute of American Art, will open Jan. 4 and run through Feb. 15.
An opening reception will take place from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 4, with awards announced at 2 p.m. The museum is at 524 Wick Ave.
A total of 389 artists who live within 75 miles of Youngstown entered submissions, and 100 works by 91 artists were selected by juror Nils Johnson Jr., who is a well-known area artist.
The Area Artist Annual is now in its 86th year.
Louis Zona, executive director of The Butler, said the exhibition “demonstrates the high level of artistic talent here in our region.
New Playground Equipment Parade
COLUMBIANA, Ohio – The arrival of new playground equipment at Firestone Park will be celebrated with a parade at 2 p.m. Jan. 2.
Families, residents and supporters are encouraged to line the parade route. The event is being presented by Birdfish Brewing.
The equipment will be escorted through town with the help of police and volunteers.
Artists Sought for Hoyt Exhibition
NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Hoyt Regional Juried Art Competition, entering its 53rd year, is inviting artists age 18 and up to compete for up to $1,500 in prizes and a chance to exhibit in a museum setting.
Most media are accepted, with the exception of video and installation. Nando Alvarez-Perez will serve as the juror.
“We intentionally choose jurors from different ages, experiences and educational backgrounds to give the competition a changing range of perspectives on contemporary art being produced in our region,” said Kimberly Koller-Jones, executive director. “Selections can vary wildly from one year to the next, offering opportunities for emerging talent and seasoned professionals to compete.”
Alvarez-Perez, 37, is the founding director of The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art.

Memories of Christmas Past Hours
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mahoning Valley Historical Society has announced the dates and hours of operation for the final weeks of the 17th Memories of Christmas Past exhibit.
The Arms Family Museum will be open until 7 p.m. Dec. 18 for the final Twilight Thursday. It will also be open for a special, last chance Twilight evening until 7 p.m. Dec. 23.
Both Arms Family Museum and Tyler History Center will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and will reopen Dec. 26 and remain open through Dec. 31, from noon to 4 p.m.
Arms Family Museum will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 29. Tyler History Center will be closed that day.
Admission is $10 ($9 for seniors and college students, $8 for children ages 3-18; free for children under age 3, active military and veterans and MVHS members). Admission also includes a visit to Tyler History Center.
Santana Tribute Band at Robins Theatre
WARREN, Ohio – Jingo, a tribute band to Santana, will come to the Robins Theatre on April 11 for a 7:30 p.m. concert.
Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Dec. 19 at RobinsTheatre.com and the theater box office.
