NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Two exhibitions will open July 28 at Arts & Education at the Hoyt and run through Sept. 30: “City Scrolls” by Nicole Maye Luga and “Shaping Space” by the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors.

A free public reception celebrating both exhibitions will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 1.

Luga’s collection of oil paintings are in the Main Galleries. They depict streetscapes, neighborhoods, storefronts and familiar corners of everyday life, transformed into enduring memories.

“Shaping Space” will be in the Walkway Gallery. It’s an eclectic collection of three-dimensional works.

Admission to the Hoyt is free. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

‘Block and Sully’ Exhibit at the JCC

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An exhibition titled “Block and Sully” will be on exhibit in the art gallery of  the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, from Aug. 3 to Sept. 23. A reception will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 4.

Jesse Block and Eva Sully were a Jewish husband-and-wife comedy team active in vaudeville and radio from 1926-1948. The exhibition showcases historic publicity photographs from famous entertainers, originally brought to Youngstown by native Rosemarie DeSalle, preserving a unique piece of entertainment history.

“Block and Sully, On the Road Again,” an expanded companion event, will take place from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 11. This program includes a look at Block and Sully along with Eddie Cantor in the movie “Kid Millions.”  

Annual Exhibit at TAG Accepting Submissions

WARREN, Ohio – Trumbull Art Gallery and Random Acts of Artists annual exhibition will open Aug. 8 at TAG’s gallery, 180 N. Park Ave., downtown, and run through Sept. 18.

The art drop-off days are July 25-28.

Awards will be given in three categories: drawing and painting; prints, graphics, collage and photography; and 3D and fiber.

Lake to Lake Paddle Challenge Registration

SHARON, Pa. – VisitMercerCountyPA has opened registration for its Lake to Lake Paddle Challenge, a timed paddling event that will take place Aug. 22. The competitors will vie for a total of $7,900 in cash prizes.

Early registration is available through July 31. Standard registration will continue from Aug. 1-15, with day-of registration available for both divisions from 8-10 a.m. Cash payment is required for day-of registration, and advance registration is recommended.

The challenge takes place on the Shenango River Water Trail and will offer two 15-mile options: the Sprint Challenge Competitive Class and the Adventure Challenge. Both courses begin at Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge and finish at NorthStar Marina on Shenango River Lake, allowing experienced racers and recreational paddlers to participate at the level that best fits their goals.

The Sprint Challenge is intended for competitive paddlers pursuing cash awards, while the Adventure Challenge provides a noncompetitive option. 

The challenge will take place on a Class I section of the Shenango River Water Trail. A scheduled water release from Pymatuning Dam is planned to support favorable paddling conditions for the event.

Stambaugh Seeks Tuba Players for Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Stambaugh Auditorium has opened registration for tuba players for its TubaChristmas Concert and Holiday Craft Show on Nov. 29.

The fee is $15. Those who need a music book  can order one for $25.
