CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city of Cleveland will celebrate its superhero roots Saturday with the Superman Movie Party at Skylight Park, Tower City Center, downtown, from noon to 6 p.m.

The free, family-friendly event will include panel discussions with DC Comics writers and artists, photo opportunities, hands-on crafts, live performances, games, giveaways and a cosplay masquerade.

The celebration will honor Cleveland’s legacy as the birthplace of Superman. The new “Superman” movie, which was filmed in Cleveland, will arrive in theaters Friday.

Throughout the event, attendees can win prizes, including signed books and comics and exclusive giveaways from Tower City tenants.

Here is the schedule: 

  • Noon: The Cinematic Symphony Orchestra: Epic scores from “Superman” and other superhero films will be performed.
  • 12:30 p.m.: Andrew Aydin: The author of “Taste of Justice,” the official Superman-themed comic cookbook, will perform a live read of Volume 1 on-screen, followed by a moderated Q&A session.
  • 1:30 p.m.: Brian Michael Bendis: The writer behind the 2018 Superman comics reboot shares stories from his career and current Superman projects.
  • 3 p.m.: Sina Grace: The author of “Superman: The Harvests of Youth” will hold a Q&A, then play “Stump the Sina,” drawing superhero requests live in under a minute.
  • 4 p.m.: Cosplay Masquerade: Showcase your costume and your heroic (or villainous) talents on stage – from skits and singing to juggling and more – to be judged with trophies and gift cards awarded to winners.
  • 5 p.m.: Grace Ellis: The DC Comics script writer discusses the comic writing process.
  • Noon to 6 p.m.: Artist and vendor village, Superman exhibits, activities and photo ops.

Concert Bands to Perform at Mastropietro Winery

CANFIELD, Ohio – Winds at the Winery will take place from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Mastropietro Winery, 14558 Ellsworth Road, Ellsworth Township.

This free outdoor event will include performances by five local community bands and will raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food will be available from Monaco’s food truck and the winery kitchen. Wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Bands will include Riverfront Community Band, Cortland Community Band, Youngstown Area Community Concert Band, Ashtabula Brass Band and Canfield Community Concert Band.

Garden Party at The Butler to Raise Funds

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Art in Bloom: A Garden Party, will take place Saturday, July 19, at The Butler Institute of American Art.

The fee is $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers and includes one free drink ticket.

Art, live music, themed food and refreshments are part of the evening. Proceeds will support the museum’s permanent collection storage project.

Themed dress is not required but recommended.  The Conkle Brothers will provide music.
