Payphone Photo Exhibit Seeks Submissions
NEW CASTLE, Pa. – When was the last time you saw a payphone, let alone used one?
Arts & Education at the Hoyt is inviting explorers from western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio to join photographer Eric Kunsman on a real-world treasure hunt celebrating the forgotten lifelines of our communities – payphones.
The Hoyt wants you to help track them down. Spot one? Snap a photo. Then submit your image through a Google form, along with the cross streets or address where you found it. Your photograph will be printed and added to a gallery portfolio at the Hoyt, officially becoming part of the current exhibition on display through March 12.
Kunsman’s show is rooted in his own experience. He relocated his studio to Rochester, N.Y., and discovered there were still many payphones there. As Kunsman began photographing them, he discovered they weren’t instruments of crime, as often assumed, but vital lifelines for people with limited access to phones. His photos now challenge the unconscious bias behind policymaking, especially when decisions are made without lived experience or personal connection to the communities affected.
As a bonus to participating, Kunsman will select one winning submission. The winner will receive a 20-inch-by-20-inch limited-edition print, chosen from his payphone photography projects.
Everyone who participates will receive a free 8-inch-by-10-inch print of their submitted photo at the Hoyt.
To learn more, a free public reception will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Hoyt.
