YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Jazz in the Park, the long-running summer concert series that takes place in Wick Park on the North Side, has unveiled its 2025 season lineup.

All concerts take place from 3-7 p.m. and are free to attend.

Scottish Fiddling Concerts at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Westminster College’s Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling will present free public concerts on Monday, July 7, and Friday, July 11, at the New Wilmington Borough Amphitheater in Borough Park off Beechwood Avenue.

In case of inclement weather, both concerts will be moved to Berlin Lounge in McKelvey Campus Center on the Westminster College campus.

An Instructors’ Concert will take place at 8 p.m. Monday with fiddlers Melinda Perttu, professor of music at Westminster and director of the Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling; guest fiddle instructor David Gardner of Williamsburg, Va.; and Daniel Perttu, professor of music at Westminster, on keyboard.

The Strathgheny Fiddlers Concert featuring student participants will take place at 8 p.m. July 11.

The concerts bookend a weeklong Scottish fiddling camp on Westminster’s campus during which participants from all over the U.S. focus on bowing techniques, ornamentation, interpretation and rhythmic nuance, while also learning by ear and how to interpret traditional notation practices.

 Crawford Perttu is a sanctioned Scottish FIRE judge, as well as a U.S. National Scottish Fiddling Champion and author of “A Violinist’s Guide to Scottish Fiddling.” 

Gardner, also a sanctioned Scottish FIRE judge, is a professional fiddler and the director of the Williamsburg Strathspey & Reel Society and a Fulbright teacher exchange scholar in music.

Art Lecture Series at the Butler Museum

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Louis A. Zona, executive director of The Butler Institute of American Art, will give free art lectures on select Sundays this summer. Each lecture will be at 2 p.m. in the Zona Auditorium. A variety of topics will be addressed.

The lectures will take place on July 13, July 27, Aug. 10 and Aug. 24.

Tommy James and the Shondells at Robins Theatre

WARREN, Ohio – Tommy James and the Shondells will return to the Robins Theatre on Dec. 6.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, July 5, at robinstheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St. 

Tommy James is one of the most celebrated pop artists of all time and is known for hits such as “Crimson and Clover,” “Mony Mony,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” “Hanky Panky” and “Sweet Cherry Wine.”

His life story, “Me, the Mob and the Music,” is being adapted into a feature film and Broadway production.

Shondell can be heard every Sunday on SiriusXM’s “Gettin’ Together with Tommy James” show.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – The next meeting of the Monday Night Writers will take place July 21 at 5 p.m. at Leana’s Books & More, 4317 Kirk Road.

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by author Nancy Christie, the meetings offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on works-in-progress.
