Conservation Biologist to Speak at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Conservation biologist, writer and Aldo Leopold biographer Curt Meine will deliver a public lecture – “The Soul of the Land: Aldo Leopold and a Deeper Connection to Nature” – at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Dietz Sullivan lecture hall in Hoyt Science Center at Westminster College.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but appreciated and can be made HERE.

Meine, a senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, a research associate with the International Crane Foundation and a senior fellow with the Center for Humans and Nature, is internationally recognized for his scholarship on environmental ethics and the history of conservation.

He authored “Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work” and appeared as the onscreen guide in the Emmy Award-winning documentary film “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time.”

Meine’s scholarship and storytelling illuminate the deep connections between people and the land, and his interdisciplinary background – spanning natural sciences, film studies, history, literature and environmental ethics – offers a perspective on today’s conservation challenges.

Leopold, often called the father of modern wildlife ecology and modern conservation, penned “A Sand County Almanac,” a foundational text in American conservation that explores the relationship between humans and the natural world.

Fiber Artist’s Unique Works at Jameson

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Hoyt Institute will display an exhibition by fiber artist Teal Fitzpatrick at UPMC Jameson Hospital from Nov. 4 to Feb. 4.

An example of the hand-stitched, punch-needle rug art by Teal Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, of Pittsburgh, creates nontraditional, hand-stitched, punch-needle rug art, in which a hollow needle tool is used to punch loops of yarn through a woven fabric to create textured, plush designs.

The result is a soft, three-dimensional surface on one side, while the other side shows a flatter, embroidery-like appearance. This beginner-friendly craft can be used to make items such as wall hangings, pillows and rugs.

The exhibition is titled “Still Frame” – like a single frame in a video – and is meant to depict one moment that is part of a bigger story. By capturing this moment, Fitzpatrick invites the viewer to pause and consider the bigger picture through the portal of a single moment.
