Herman’s Hermits Holiday Show at Robins 

WARREN, Ohio – Herman’s Hermits – Old English Christmas starring Peter Noone will come to the Robins Theatre at 8 p.m. Dec. 20.

In this special holiday performance, Herman’s Hermits blend their 1960s hits with traditional Christmas songs, creating a festive show for the holiday season. Fans can expect a night of nostalgia and holiday cheer.

Music Making Workshop at McDonough Museum

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Trainers from Ableton Live will lead a workshop and performance Sept. 24 at the McDonough Museum of art that will open the door to music-making for everyone.

The event is presented by Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music and will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The interactive session will combine keynote storytelling, live electronic performance and practical demonstrations within Ableton Live – a software that has revolutionized the creation, teaching and performance of music.

“The traditional ways we’ve taught music have left too many people behind,” said Feral Kitty of Ableton Live. “But with tools like Live, and with teaching methods that prioritize creativity and access, anyone can discover their musical voice.”

The workshop is designed for producers, educators, students and the general public. No prior music experience is required – only curiosity and a willingness to play.

Prince Project Coming to Robins Theatre

WARREN, Ohio – The Prince Project, a tribute to the late Prince, will come to the Robins Theatre on Dec. 13 for an 8 p.m. concert.

‘World According to Polka’ to Launch New Season

KENT, Ohio – “The World According to Polka” will return to PBS Western Reserve for a third season this fall, with host Jake Kouwe and the Chardon Polka Band. 

The new season will air exclusively on PBS Western Reserve at 8:30 p.m. Fridays beginning Sept. 26. 

Following their broadcast premiere, each episode will be available on demand via the PBS Western Reserve website, PBS App and YouTube. 

Season 3 will continue to showcase how interwoven polka is in today’s cultural landscape. Guest performers will include DJ Kishka, Postmodern Jukebox, Gunhild Carling, Patty Candela, Happy Players and the Lederhosen Junkies. 

“We’re not highlighting movie stars who get paid millions of dollars to be on screen,” Kouwe said. “We’re shining a spotlight on folks making strudel at 5 a.m. with a family recipe and a guy who wears a fake beard and spins polka records at the bar down the street. These are delightfully eclectic stories about real people.”  

“The World According to Polka” – created by  Kouwe and Jeff Grau and executive produced by Gary Manke – is the recipient of a Public Media Award and two regional Emmys. 

An exclusive preview of the new season will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at PBS Western Reserve. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. 

Lecture on Preserving Family Heirlooms

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Jessica Trickett, Mahoning Valley Historical Society collections manager, will share tips on preserving heirlooms at noon Sept. 18 in the ballroom of Tyler History center, downtown.

The lecture is part of the MVHS Bites and Bits of History series. Admission is free.

The historical society receives many historical items from private collectors and residents and must keep them intact.

Trickett will share strategies to keep personal heirlooms from harm and handling techniques. In addition, she will demonstrate storage techniques, with acid free and archival quality storage materials, and will share resources for where to find them.

Caring for People with Dementia 

COLUMBIANA, Ohio – Lindsay Clifton will present “The Granny Files: Insights, Humor & Dementia” at 7 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Columbiana Women’s Club, 121 N. Main St.

Clifton will read excerpts from her book “Middle Fingers of Love: The Granny File” and provide insights about caring for loved ones with dementia in peace and with humor. The event will include light refreshments and a book signing.

Traditional Scottish Music at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Ceòl na Teud, Westminster College’s traditional Scottish music ensemble, along with the Jazz Ensemble and several small brass ensembles, will perform at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Admiral Robert Shumaker Park Amphitheater. Admission is free to the public.

The concert is under the direction of Westminster school of music faculty members Melinda Crawford Perttu and JaKobe Henry. 

Ceòl na Teud’s instrumentalists play fiddles, guitar, mandolin, recorders and bass. Their performance will feature lively Scottish dance tunes like “Road to the Isles,” toe-tapping reels, jigs and the group’s version of Westminster’s Alma Mater, performed in the traditional Scottish style. 

The Westminster College Jazz Ensemble will close the concert with “Darn That Dream,” “How High the Moon” and “Spain.”  

In the case of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the Berlin Lounge at Westminster College’s McKelvey Campus Center. 

Pickleball Courts Coming to Eastwood Mall

NILES, Ohio – The Dink Yard, an indoor pickleball facility with six professional-grade courts, will open Oct. 1 at Eastwood Mall.

The facility offers flexible options, including memberships, hourly court rentals and open-play sessions, with plans for organized tournaments and leagues as well.

The Dink Yard will host a sneak peek week Oct. 1-4 with $5 open-play sessions in the evenings. There is also a presale special running now through Sept. 30. During that time, new members can get their first month of a Premier membership for $30.

EcoFest to Celebrate Sustainability

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – EcoFest will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 on Elm Street, on the North Side.

The event, which will celebrate sustainability, will feature pumpkin decorating with natural materials; permaculture workshops; apple pressing and cider-making demonstrations; live music and art exhibits.

There will also be vendors, food and a haunted history walk and ghost story session.

YMCA Central Branch Plans Gala Event 

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The YMCA of Youngstown’s inaugural Central YMCA Gala will take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Maronite Center, 1555 S. Meridian Road.

Fiery Demonstrations at The Hoyt 

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Arts & Education at the Hoyt will present Ignite, a fiery fundraiser that will benefit the museum’s free community arts programming, from 6-10 p.m. Sept. 20.

The event will include demonstrations in glassblowing, metals casting and pottery from the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Rivers of Steel, Mud Monkey Pottery and the PennOhio Clay Guild. Guests will have the opportunity to make their own fire art.

General admission is $25. The event will include live music, fire-dancing performances, s’mores by the fire and a fireworks finale.

Guests can also register for workshops to cast an aluminum tile, burn a wood coaster or raku fire a rice bowl. Tickets are timed throughout the evening and recommended in advance to guarantee a seat. Ten minute time slots for plasma cutting with Ellwood City artist Asia Ward will additionally be available on-site for free.

Guests can stop by the artists market for more demos and merchandise by Outlier Designs (glass lamping), Mrs. D’s Art (alcohol inks), Mill Street Printing (leather burning hat bar) and ICG Hobbies and Games. ICG is offering a unique One Shot for Dungeons and Dragons fans interested in a short fiery campaign.

There will also be a themed basket raffle, with works of original art valued at $250 and more.
