YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Two exhibitions will open Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the McDonough Museum of Art at Youngstown State University.

A reception for both exhibitions will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at the McDonough.

The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

“Around Here, It’s Always Eternity” will be on display through Oct. 24. It features four contemporary artists: Bonnie Leibowitz, Alice Pixley Young, Deborah Wasserman and Etty Yaniv. It explores the contemporary landscape as a metaphor for social, ecological and political upheaval. Using discarded objects, wire, fabric, photography, moving shadows and painting, the four artists examine how built and natural environments collide, forcing a look at resource exploitation and environmental memory.

The Kilcawley Print Collection will be on display through Dec. 12. Acquired over several years during the 1970s, the collection includes 23 signed and numbered prints by prominent artists of the period, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Christo. Louis Zona, who was chair of the department of art at the time of its acquisition, said at the time that the collection includes “exceptionally high-quality, limited edition prints by many of the most influential and historically important artists of our time.

Loop Receives $5K Gift to Sponsor a Studio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Loop Youngstown  Arts and Culture Center has received a donation of $5,000 from McElroy Comprehensive Accounting to sponsor a studio in its new art space at 805 Mahoning Ave. 

“Small business is the backbone of local corporate philanthropy, and we are honored to recognize this generous support,” said interim Director Karen Schubert. “Studio sponsorships are a driver in our project’s sustainability, and it’s just fun to walk by the studio signs every day and say a little thanks.”

In just a few months, the repurposed building is already becoming a vibrant hub for local creatives with artist studios, workshops, exhibitions and community programs. All 31 studios are currently occupied by local artists and creative entrepreneurs, including two emerging artist fellows. One of these studios will be named in recognition of McElroy Comprehensive Accounting’s gift.

“Supporting Loop felt like an easy decision. Arts and culture help make a community feel vibrant, connected and worth investing in,” said Niko McElroy, president of McElroy Comprehensive Accounting.

Guided Tour of Pioneer Cemetery

WARREN, Ohio – The Trumbull County Historical Society will host a guided tour of Pioneer Cemetery,  661 Mahoning Ave NW, at 10 a.m. Sept. 19. Pioneer is believed to be the oldest cemetery in the Western Reserve.

Attendees will get to learn about the history of the cemetery, the pioneers who settled Trumbull County and the efforts that are being made to preserve the cemetery. The tour is one hour. Tickets are $10 per person, and registration is required. Tickets can be purchased HERE.

Chefs for Charity Event Will Battle Homelessness

WARREN, Ohio – The third annual Chefs for Charity event will take place from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 17 at St. Demetrios Community Center, 3223 Atlantic St. NE. Tickets are $75 (tables of 10 are available).

The event brings together over 20 local restaurants, each showcasing a specialty dish. The evening will feature live entertainment by Backbeat, assorted raffles, a cash bar, cash raffle (winner doesn’t need to be present) and other activities.

Proceeds will stabilize housing and fight homelessness in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Participating restaurants include Vernon’s, Salvatore’s, V2, Station Square, The Fireplace, Aqua Pazzo, Sunrise, Buena Vista, Blue Wolf and many more.

Canfield Fair Livestock Auction for Charity

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Canfield Fair livestock auction will take place Sept. 3 in the  event center.

Companies and organizations can purchase livestock to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley for distribution to families in Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties. 

Bidding will be done online via the Canfield Fair app.

Method 8 to Screen ‘Zombie Five 0’ Film

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Method 8 will present its annual movie premiere, dinner and fashion show-dance Aug. 30 at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The film, made by Method 8, is titled “Zombie Five 0 Unit 8 the Darkness & the Light.”

Method 8 has been serving the Mahoning Valley for over 19 years as an independent performing arts outlet, making independent and small-budget films. All productions can be viewed online at Method8Inc.com. 

This year’s movie, written and directed by West, is 60 minutes long. It is about a classified zombie drug unit assigned to investigate a surge in zombie and paranormal cases due to drug use. The film is a mystery PG-rated horror project.

The cast includes West, Frank Mathews of Detroit, Lawrence and Liz Wilmering of Campbell, Donald McGhee of Youngstown, Kewon Conner of Youngstown, Robino Lawrence of Youngstown and Joyce Jones of Tennessee.
