YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University will present the opera “Alcina” at 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in Ford Theater, on the lower level of Bliss Hall.

“Alcina” was composed by George Handel in 1735. It explores themes of magic, illusion and love, and is known for its dramatic and expressive music.
The Dana School of Music Opera Ensemble is led by Misook Yun.
Smarts Students to Demonstrate Their Work
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Students Motivated by the Arts will host its annual “Art You Can See” and “Art You Can Hear” open houses at 5:30 p.m. April 15 and 16.
The students will demonstrate their work from the spring semester at the events, which will take place at Smarts, 25 E. Boardman St., downtown. Admission is free.
More than 150 students will participate.
YSU Jazz Ensemble in Concert
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University jazz ensemble, led by Kent J. Engelhardt, will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 14, in Ford Theater, lower level of Bliss Hall.
It will perform “The Blues Machine” by Sammy Nestico, “Green Piece” by Maria Schneider and “Make It Happen” by YSU undergraduate student and pianist Aaron White. Vocalist Elizabeth Jadue will sing “Something’s Gotta Give” by Johnny Mercer and “Mood Indigo” by Duke Ellington. She will be joined by Luke Walters on vocals to perform “Knock On Wood” by Eddie Floyd. Jadue will also sing “Rosanna” by Toto, as arranged by YSU graduate student and lead alto saxophonist Andrea Richard.
Lecture on Valley’s Effort During WW II
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Traci Manning, curator of education for the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will give a free presentation on the Valley’s World War II effort titled “Testing our Strength: The Steel Valley in the 1940s” at noon Thursday, April 17, at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown.
American involvement in World War II changed the scope of local industries as factories turned their attention to war production. Manning’s lecture will delve into the effort.
The address is part of the MVHS’ Bites and Bits of History lecture series. Attendees can bring a lunch.
Dana School of Music Chapter Recognized
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Collegiate Music Education Association chapter at Youngstown State University has been named a Chapter of Excellence by the National Association for Music Education in the area of Professional Development for the 2024-25 academic year.
The recognition highlights the chapter’s commitment to providing outstanding professional development opportunities for music education students. At YSU, the chapter is composed of music education students from the Dana School of Music.
The chapter will be formally recognized and presented with the award at the NAfME Collegiate Leadership Advocacy Summit in Reston, Va., in June.
