YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Building a Better Belmont Initiative will host the third annual Bike Belmont on May 18.
Experienced riders can bike a 32-mile route from downtown to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport beginning at noon. The route includes about 550 feet of ascent and descent and will be ridden at 12 mph.
There will be a 12-mile, police-escorted ride at a more relaxed pace starting at 2 p.m. That route includes nearly 400 feet of ascent and descent.
E-bike rentals will be available.
After the rides, registered participants can enjoy a free lunch catered by Daddy D’s BBQ at the B&O Banquet Hall, with music and drinks at the Boxcar Lounge.
Bike bells and lights, provided by Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, will be free at the event. T-shirts are available for $20 and will be provided to volunteers and sponsors.
Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Multiple refreshment and bathroom stops will be available along the ride.
The purpose of Bike Belmont is to explore the diverse businesses along the Belmont Avenue corridor, to promote Belmont Avenue as a vital connector to employers and essential services, to connect with each other and to interact with the stakeholders along the corridor.
Last year’s event attracted 75 riders, including elected officials and residents of Youngstown, Liberty and neighboring communities. Business owners supported the initiative by donating water and snacks and by cheering riders along the route. Organizers expect about 200 riders this year.
