YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Thrive Mahoning Valley’s transportation equity program, Pedal Forward, has grown into a social enterprise bike shop that powers its mission of providing free bicycles to adults who need reliable transportation to work, school and essential services.

What began as an effort to refurbish donated bicycles for adults in need has evolved into a full-service community bike shop serving riders from across the Mahoning Valley while generating revenue to sustain transportation equity work. Every purchase and repair at Pedal Forward supports free bikes, safety gear and cycling engagement for individuals facing transportation barriers.

“These efforts are only possible because of the generosity of local residents, donors and partners who believe that transportation should never be a barrier to opportunity,” said Christopher Colón, Thrive Mahoning Valley executive director.

Pedal Forward Bike Shop services:

  • New bikes: As an authorized retailer for State Bicycle Co., the shop stocks new bicycles for casual riders, commuters and those ready for entry-level all-road adventures or bikepacking across Ohio and beyond. Prices range from $540 to $999.
  • Used bikes: A range of refurbished bikes donated by community members, including vintage road bikes, modern road bikes, mountain bikes and hybrid and triathlon bikes. Prices range from $120 to $400.
  • Repair and maintenance services: By-appointment services include flat repair and tube replacement, tune-ups, general maintenance, wheel truing, cosmetic adjustments and replacements and more to keep riders safe on the road.

The Pedal Forward Bike Shop is located at Thrive Mahoning Valley’s office, 854 Wilson Ave., and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Appointments for sale and service are available Fridays. Riders can browse new and used bikes, schedule repairs or learn more about the program during open hours.

Pedal Forward is part of Thrive Mahoning Valley’s broader work to build a more welcoming and equitable community by connecting residents to economic and social opportunities across the region. Revenue from the bike shop supports free bicycles for adults facing transportation insecurity, strengthening access to work and community life throughout the Valley.

Community members can support the mission by purchasing or servicing their bikes at Pedal Forward, donating gently used bicycles or becoming recurring donors.
