BOARDMAN, Ohio – Toastmasters Executive Club 408 will host its semiannual Speech Contest on Monday at Adamas Square Plaza, 8381 Market St.
The doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and guests are welcome to attend and observe. Refreshments will be provided. The event will kick off at 6:45 p.m. with the Humorous Speech Contest, followed by the Table Topics Contest. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony.
Seven contestants will compete in the contest. The humorous speeches are original works that members have been crafting, while table topics require impromptu responses to a prompt revealed only a moment before each contestant’s turn to speak. The contest winners will advance to compete at the Area Contest in September.
“We have an awesome group here, and I’m really looking forward to the event,” said Angela Johnson, club president.
Speech contests are an important part of the Toastmasters’ education program, providing an opportunity for club members to gain speaking experience, compete against their peers, improve themselves and observe proficient speakers, a news release states.
“We have new members competing for the first time, seasoned members training the new members and people stepping into new roles,” said Rayshone Phillips, vice president of membership for the club. “The energy in our club is buzzing.”
Toastmasters Executive Club 408 has been serving the Greater Youngstown area since 1966, teaching public speaking and leadership skills. The club meets from 6:45-8:45 p.m. every Monday at the Mahoning County Republican Party headquarters at 8331 Market St., Boardman – the club is nonpartisan and has no political affiliation. Guests are welcome to attend regular meetings but must be at least 18 years old to participate in the discussion of current events and table topics.
