WARREN, Ohio – Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull reopened just over a month ago, and some challenges have been evident.
“It’s a difficult process to reopen a hospital, and getting Trumbull going again has had its challenges – yet we are addressing them and will continue to do so,” an Insight spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. “Our sole purpose is to provide healthcare access and quality care to the community.”
During a Trumbull County commissioners meeting Wednesday, Commissioner Tony Bernard said he has been in contact with Charlotte Gardiner, president of Mercy Health – St. Joseph Warren Hospital, who said there is no truth to statements made at last week’s commissioners meeting about patients being turned away from St. Joseph if they first went to the Insight hospital for care.
Commissioner Rick Hernandez said in light of comments made by a union spokesperson regarding care at the facility and employee relations, he is offering to organize a meeting between Insight management and the unions to improve communication.
He said he emphasized the importance of having two hospitals in the region and remains hopeful Insight can expand its services soon. Currently, only the hospital’s emergency room is open.
Insight reopened the Warren hospital Oct. 14, promising 24/7 emergency care and inpatient and outpatient services. At the time, Insight CEO Jawad Shah said the reopening would be done in phases.
Tom Connelly, AFSCME Ohio Council 8 Local 2026 president, has been critical of the reopening process, including the lack of services and the callback procedures for employees.
The hospital paused operations in late March after taking over the facility through Steward Health Care System’s bankruptcy.
