LORDSTOWN, Ohio – Seven months after a shutdown, about 700 UAW Local 1112 members have returned to work at Ultium Cells in Lordstown as the plant begins to ramp up battery-cell production.
Local 1112 President George Goranitis says a 2023 national agreement with General Motors helped laid-off workers maintain health benefits and receive supplemental pay, while some workers transferred to other GM plants.
As employees return, they are undergoing safety and job training before production can fully resume.
Goranitis says morale has improved considerably, but the plant’s future remains tied to the recovery of the electric vehicle market.
